What Simmers at My Nape, What Shows on My Face
A hand holds the face as if it can no longer bear it, while at the nape a butterfly has left its cocoon and is almost about to fly: times when patience is tested but victory is near.

A hand far coarser, larger and more deformed than the face is covering it. There is a cocoon at the nape; the butterfly has both emerged and not emerged. Two states stand at the same time.
This work was made right at that moment of transition. It is the record of a mind swinging between the feeling of “I have become a butterfly, I will fly any moment” and the awareness of still being in the cocoon. Our personas bind us to society; that large hand covering the face is the imposition that will not let the mask fall. The cocoon at the nape is the freedom I think I will live once I have transformed.
The title comes from an idiom. “To brew boza at someone’s nape” means to keep pressing someone and give them no peace. Here what simmers at my nape is not someone else’s pressure but my own maturing. The face is turned to society and covered; the nape is unseen, and something that belongs to me is happening there.
