- Made for the Flamingo Line open call
I heard about the Flamingo Line open call a few days before the deadline; I learned the subject by researching it, and the more I researched the more sensitive I became.
I looked into the flamingos, the problem they face around İzmir, the human-made environmental destruction and why the exhibition was called Flamingo Line. I learned that the wetlands are shrinking, that the city has come right up to the Gediz Delta, and that the junction built there has narrowed the birds’ living space and damaged the habitat.
I tried to make visible for those far away what the people of the region and nature lovers already know. You see the hardships the flamingo lives through one by one; the bird looking the viewer in the eye is the striking side of the work.
I wanted to design an experience that holds the viewer but unsettles them.
